Opinion Piece: What’s in a Name?

Position or job titles, as John Tropman and Tom Harvey pointed out in their On Board with Nonprofit Governance column in Issue 4 – 2009, convey critical messages and impact public or organizational perceptions of roles, authority, and responsibility. Accordingly, they can also impede or enhance one’s ability to achieve performance objectives.

Eugene Fram, former co-chair of the Alliance for Children and Families Board of Directors and currently nonprofit consultant and emeritus marketing professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, feels that many nonprofit agencies and organizations would benefit from reconsidering the position titles they bestow on their senior executives.
