Please query us before you write or submit anything for publication. This will help ensure that your topic fits within our editorial plan, which will increase the likelihood that it will be published. Queries are mandatory. We will not consider unexpected submissions.
Original work written for our readers—the volunteer directors and trustees serving on Alliance and United Neighborhood Centers of America member boards—will be given a preference.
Previously published work may be accepted if you have the copyright or obtain permission for the piece to be published in the Nonprofit Director. We may ask, however, that you write a new introduction or an update for any previously published article. We may also suggest that you write a condensed version of the article if it is too long for placement within our magazine, or if it contains content that we don’t feel reflects our reader’s interests or concerns.
First person accounts are acceptable and will be identified as such. If you are not an author but have read something, heard a presentation, or viewed a video that you think would appeal to our readers and you wish to alert us to this, feel free to do so. We require, however, that you include your contact information so we can discuss your recommendations with you. Please do not contact any potential authors directly. Let us do this.
There are a wide range of topics or subjects that will be of interest to our readers. Accordingly, we can’t suggest topics for you to write on. Instead we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the role that our readers play so that your contributions clearly resonate with them. We will also evaluate articles on their readability, organization, and appeal to our readers. Articles with compelling leads, case histories, practical recommendations, and how-to elements will score higher in our evaluations. If we agree to accept a paper from you, we will provide a rough word count and other specific information on the format, etc.
Upon request, we will provide sample copies of the Alliance for Children & Families Magazine, containing the Nonprofit Director, at no cost. Send all queries and requests to Malcolm McIntyre, communications director at the Alliance.
